However, it can still take time to adjust to a new device, particularly when that equipment hasn’t been designed to enhance the user experience. The Avalon Integration team recently discovered that the Zebra MC3300 Handheld Mobile Computer elevates user-friendly to a new standard that you’ll appreciate, no matter how tech-savvy you are.

So, why do you need the Zebra MC3300 Handheld Mobile Computer?

Front View of the MC3300 Handheld Mobile Computer

The MC3300 is about as easy as it gets—and just as versatile. Zebra designed the rugged handheld computer so you can customize it to the way you’re going to use it. With all of these choices, you can transform this mobile computer into a purpose-built device that nails every task you need, with accuracy and ease.

Look at the data input options. The MC3300 has both a touchscreen and keyboard, with your choice of alphanumeric, numeric, and functional numeric keypads. The 4-inch screen is plenty large enough to type easily, so your workers aren’t wasting time with a temperamental touchscreen that commands precision.

Zebra powers the MC3300 with its fortified Android for enterprise-class function. Right out of the box, the computer runs the latest version of Android, so users have the familiarity that comes with this operating system—i.e., no training required. You can also upgrade easily to future Android versions. And if the pain of OS migration that resulted from Microsoft’s abandonment is still fresh on your mind, you should know that Zebra guarantees security updates for 10 years from the release date.

For those TE apps you’re already using, the MC3300 will run them, right out of the box. There’s no backend modification necessary. You also have the popular Ivanti Velocity TE pre-loaded and pre-licensed on the device. But if you need to update your TEs or convert green screen apps, Zebra’s AllTouch TE is also pre-loaded, which helps you gain the more intuitive, graphics screens that today’s users prefer.

We recently took the time to examine Zebra MC3300 in our offices at Avalon Integration. This unique mobile computer doubles as a super scanner (or maybe it’s the other way around). The scanning power and intelligence alone for this rugged handheld computer will deliver rapid ROI. So many scanning features are built into it that warehouses, manufacturers, and retail operations are going to need to test it out.

The first thing you should know about the Zebra MC3300 is that you can choose from four form factors, so the “purpose-built” aspect really fits your needs. There’s the pistol grip, which is ergonomically ideal for heavy-duty scanning without wrist strain. The turret style with the rotating head makes it easier to scan in hard-to-reach places. Zebra also offers the Zebra MC3300 in a straight shooter style with either 0º or 45 º scan.

So, why do you need the Zebra MC3300?

MC3300 - SimulScan

As a scanner, the Zebra MC3300 is a workhorse. Zebra integrated its advanced scanning features, like SimulScan, which lets you scan multiple barcodes and even an entire document with one trigger pull. You can specify which types of data you want to capture—like barcodes, images, signatures, checkboxes, text fields, and phone numbers.

Since the job of a barcode scanner is to scan barcodes, we also need to appreciate that not all of these codes are perfectly positioned and in flawless condition. Zebra’s scanning excellence lets you grab barcodes that are hard to read, like those that are scratched, dirty, damaged, poorly printed, and even covered in frost or under shrinkwrap.

Here to Save You Time!

MC3300 - Close Range

That’s a big time-saver for scan-intensive jobs. In addition, the extended read range SE4850 engine goes from 3 inches to 70 feet, so just about no barcode is out of reach. Even at close range, the Zebra MC3300’s wide field of view reads large barcodes without having to maneuver the scanner.

While not necessarily a function of the scanning ability, the ruggedness of this Zebra mobile computer is worthy of note. The drop spec goes up to 5 feet on a concrete floor and withstands thousands of tumbles. You’ll appreciate that when you don’t have to repair or replace the sturdy device.

We’ve been discussing enterprise operating systems, as the deadlines approach for Microsoft ending support for Windows Embedded Handheld and Windows CE. The great OS Migration started when Microsoft made the announcement in 2016 that it would no longer provide security updates for their operating systems by 2020. Businesses that have been relying on Microsoft’s OSs for their rugged handheld devices have had to choose between staying with an unsupported operating system, rewriting their apps to fit another version of Windows, or choosing to move to another OS. While there’s naturally a lot of discussion about which choice is best, let’s talk about budgeting for OS migration from Windows.

How will the change in your operating system impact your investment in devices, both legacy, and upgrades?

Start by Assessing Your Legacy Devices for OS Migration

Take Stock of your Legacy Devices including the TC8000 and the MC3300

Are they a few years old (or older)? If so, you’re ready for an upgrade. The evolution of the rugged mobile technology in recent years has delivered a wealth of benefits that command your attention. The productivity factor has escalated. Your workforce can be more efficient with their time, which contributes to a rapid return on investment in your new technology. The Zebra TC8000 all-touch mobile computer, for example, has been proven to boost productivity by 14%. That’s the equivalent of adding one hour per worker per shift. The factor that bonuses across your workforce to determine how this investment in new technology benefits your business. The Zebra MC3300 mobile computer offers the flexibility of four different form factors so you can customize it your ergonomic needs—which enhances productivity as well. This mobile computer also features the combination of three scan engines, three keypads, and three tiers of functionality, so it fits the way you need to use the device, not the other way around.

Create an Inventory of Your Current Use Cases for OS Migration

Take Stock of Your Current use case

Identify how you use the devices as well as the desired results. For example, for barcode scanning, do you require an extended reach? Are you scanning in cold storage where the workers wear gloves and the barcodes could be covered with frost? Do you do a high volume of scanning with a mobile computer or is it purely a secondary feature? You might likely discover that a “one-size-fits-all” approach for rugged mobile devices doesn’t fit your needs. Today’s more advanced technology presents a broad array of purpose-built devices that are drilled down to specific tasks and functions.

Prioritize Your Needs for Functions and Features Investment for OS Migration

Prioritize Your Needs for the OS Migration from Windows

Prioritize your needs so that you understand the functions and features that require investment. Be sure to forecast anticipated uses so that you can future-proof your investment. This will help you focus on the hardware that will best achieve your goals. You can use these guidelines to avoid purchasing less or more than you need. These steps will help you profile your hardware needs. You might have some legacy devices that are still highly functional in your work environment. If they run on an unsupported version of Windows, are you comfortable with the lack of security updates?

Establish a Timeline

Establish a timeline for your Migration that's best for your Warehouse

The OS migration will occur over a period of time. You’re not going to pull the plug one day and be up and running the next. You need a strategy to deploy the new operating system and integrate the new devices. Avalon Integration can help here. We specialize in enterprise systems integration and we’re experienced in the challenges of OS migration. We’ll apply our expertise to develop a strategy with you, acquire the hardware, and implement the transition in an efficient, effective process.
